Leah Everist (r), a trail construction leader, uses a pickaxe to "bust tread," or cut trail, into a mountain meadow. More than a dozen volunteers built, improved or linked up more than 100 kilometers of trail over the course of this summer. The organizers hope to attract four times this number of volunteers next summer and begin trail construction across the region.
